A research team led by Gérard Zinzindohoué of the Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin has documented living coral communities off Benin’s coast at a location long thought to contain only a dead reef. The work, reported in Frontiers in Marine Science, revisited leads from 1960s surveys that had been conducted to identify fishing areas. Those earlier surveys indicated a possible reef more than 50 metres below the surface, but concluded it was probably dead. Using the historical information as a guide, the team surveyed 11.5 kilometres of seabed with sonar and detected two signals that could indicate reefs. They then used an underwater drone and the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab’s Deep Sea Camera System to inspect the most promising areas. The images showed corals growing in patches on rocky seafloor, rather than a continuous coral barrier. Researchers described the site as apparently healthy and recorded eight different coral types and eight fish species sheltering or feeding around the corals. The fish listed include golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish, and two damselfish species. The team calls it, to its knowledge, the first confirmed living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf.
