Paddington: The Musical has made a remarkable impact on the West End theatre scene by becoming the first new musical to win nine awards at the WhatsOnStage awards. Since its debut in December, the production has captured the hearts of both critics and audiences alike, establishing itself as a standout performance in the competitive landscape of London theatre.
The musical, which features cutting-edge animatronics to bring the iconic bear to life, has been praised for its imaginative staging and engaging musical numbers. The Guardian's theatre critic, Arifa Akbar, described it as 'the new Mary Poppins,' highlighting the show's ability to creatively reinterpret a beloved story while delivering an entertaining experience for all ages.
At the 26th annual WhatsOnStage awards, Paddington triumphed in several categories, solidifying its status as one of the most awarded shows in the ceremony's history. It joins the ranks of other celebrated productions, such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Miss Saigon, as one of the top three most awarded shows ever.
In addition to winning the coveted title of Best New Musical, Paddington also received accolades for Best Professional Debut Performance, awarded to Timi Akinyosade, and Best Direction, which went to Luke Sheppard.
