Nature-Based Therapy Shows Promising Results for Mental Health

Dose of Nature, a charity based in London, is pioneering a unique approach to mental health treatment by prescribing time spent outdoors. Founded by Alison Greenwood, a former NHS psychologist, the initiative has successfully delivered 1,500 one-on-one courses that have shown to outperform standard NHS talking therapies. The program boasts a recovery rate of 64%, compared to the NHS's 50%, and an improvement rate of 86%, significantly higher than the 69% reported for traditional therapies.

The program emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of nature, encouraging clients to engage with their surroundings to alleviate mental health issues. Greenwood highlights that nature has been recognized for its positive impact on mental well-being for centuries. She notes, "We evolved outside, under the sky, and as soon as we get outside, we’re free." This philosophy underpins the Dose of Nature approach, which combines outdoor experiences with mindfulness and observation of the natural world.

Participants in the program have reported transformative experiences. Tom Krumins, a former client who now works as an operations assistant for Dose of Nature, shared how the program helped him manage his bipolar disorder. He described feeling vulnerable upon joining but found solace and stability through guided sessions in nature. Krumins stated, "I have never felt more enabled and more optimistic about the future," illustrating the profound impact of the program on his life.

The initiative has garnered attention for its innovative approach, with GPs now referring patients to Dose of Nature as a viable alternative to medication and traditional therapies. Dr. Faisal Islam, a GP at Cross Deep Surgery, emphasized the program's effectiveness, noting that it has provided renewed hope for patients who previously felt 'written off' by conventional mental health services. The program not only addresses mental health but also fosters social connections, enhancing the overall well-being of participants.
