English vowels can differ in vowel quality, which is related largely to tongue position, and in duration, or length. The team created speech stimuli that varied these two properties independently, then asked participants to categorize English words in a listening task and repeat sounds as closely as possible in an imitation task. The reported results differed by contrast. When distinguishing beat–bit, learners mainly relied on duration; when distinguishing bat–bet, they relied more on vowel quality. The same cue preferences were linked to production in a selective way: learners who gave more weight to duration in hearing beat–bit produced a clearer duration difference when imitating those vowels, while those who weighted vowel quality more for bat–bet produced a clearer quality difference. The report also says that ambiguous beat–bit imitations were influenced by a Mandarin-like /i/ sound. That observation is consistent with existing first-language sound categories affecting how learners process and reproduce English vowels.
