Delhi Experiences Record-Breaking Temperatures in Early March

Delhi has set a new record for the hottest first week of March in the past 50 years, with temperatures soaring to 35.7 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This significant rise in temperature was officially recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory, the city's primary weather station, on March 7, 2026.

The previous record for the highest temperature during the first week of March was 34.8 degrees Celsius, noted on March 5, 1999. The current temperature is 7.3 degrees above the normal seasonal average, showcasing a dramatic shift in weather patterns for the region.

In addition to Delhi, several neighboring states in North India are also experiencing unusually high temperatures. For instance, Haryana recorded a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius in Hisar, which is 6.2 degrees above normal. Similarly, temperatures in Uttarakhand have risen sharply, with Dehradun's minimum temperature increasing from 12°C to 17.8°C in just a few days, indicating a broader trend of rising temperatures across the region.

This early onset of heat raises concerns about the impact on local ecosystems and public health, as residents adapt to the warmer conditions. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on weather patterns and forecasts for the coming days.
