Community-Based Tourism Revitalizes India's Himalayan Villages
Village Ways celebrates 21 years of promoting sustainable tourism in Uttarakhand, enhancing local livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage.
Village Ways, a pioneering organization in community-based tourism, has been transforming the lives of remote Himalayan communities in Uttarakhand for over two decades. Founded by Manisha and Himanshu Pande, the initiative aims to combat urban migration and support traditional rural lifestyles through low-impact tourism. The project, which began in 2005 with just five villages, has now expanded to include over 30 villages across India, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the rich culture and stunning landscapes of the region.
In the picturesque Kathdhara village, located within the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors are greeted by vibrant colors and warm hospitality. The village, home to 22 families, showcases the beauty of rural life against the backdrop of the majestic Panchachuli peaks. Guests are guided by locals like Deepak, who share insights into the community's daily routines and traditions, fostering a sense of connection and respect between visitors and residents.
The Village Ways model emphasizes collective community involvement, with profits from tourism distributed evenly among villagers. This collaborative approach has garnered attention from government officials, leading to partnerships aimed at expanding the initiative to other states. Accommodation is typically provided in small guesthouses, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying authentic culinary experiences, such as traditional thali meals during festive celebrations.
As part of the experience, guests embark on guided hikes through the stunning landscapes of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to diverse flora and fauna, including over 200 bird species. The sanctuary, established in 1988, has shifted the local relationship with the forest, promoting conservation and sustainable practices. Former hunters have transitioned into knowledgeable guides, sharing their expertise with visitors and fostering pride in their heritage. Village Ways not only supports local economies but also empowers individuals, with many young villagers now serving as guides, cooks, and porters, enhancing their skills and confidence in the process.
